Chalk Lion was born not in a boardroom or a bar, but on a walk — two old friends, deep in conversation, following the chalk-lined paths of the Chiltern Hills. For founders Graham Whitehouse and Mark Watkinson, it was a familiar ritual. After years spent in corporate careers, they found clarity not in spreadsheets or meetings, but in stillness, nature, and good conversation, usually over a well-poured gin. That day, the talk turned to gin itself. Not just the drink, but what it had become. Trendy flavours. Gimmicky colours. Style over substance. Somewhere along the way, the quiet art of gin-making had been lost in the noise.

With no interest in chasing trends, Graham and Mark set out to build something different, a distillery that stripped away the clutter and put the quality of the gin back at the heart of the experience. Chalk Lion was their answer: a distillery committed to clean, honest gin, made with precision, patience, and respect for tradition.
The name Chalk Lion nods to both the land that inspired them; the white chalk figures that line the hills of their home and to the quiet strength they believe defines true craftsmanship. Every element, from the locally sourced botanicals to the weight of the bottle in your hand, is a deliberate choice. Each small batch is distilled with care and restraint. No over-styling, no filler, just well-made gin, designed to be savoured. It's a product of passion, but also of principle.
